You never know what to expect...

...until it happens.

Cairo can be a crazy, chaotic, random place - and its for these reasons that I enjoy living here. What person wants to wake up in the morning, go through the routine of stepping out their door and going/coming back from work knowing every step and smell of the way?

Actually, I guess a lot of people are like that, but I'm not one of them.

Last week, I got into a black and white cab to go home. It's always those times when everything seems normal that something strange happens.

We got stuck in traffic on 26th of July Street in Zamalek (as usual) jammed car-to-car on the not nearly wide enough main street.

The cab driver had a box of tissues fixed to his inside passenger side of the windshield of the car, with both driver and passenger side windows opened (Egyptian air conditioning).

Just then, a cab driver on our right hand side, stuck his hand into the cab without saying a thing and grabbed a couple tissues from the above-mentioned tissue box.

The traffic let up, and the car drove away. My cab driver looked at me, I looked back and we gave each other that knowing "what the hell just happened?" look.

I asked "Ay da???" (trans:what is/was that???).

"M3rufsh," he replied laughing (trans: I don't know).

Bewlidered and amused, I got out of the cab still laughing. I even forgot my pissed off "don't you dare so much as look at me otherwise I'll take off one of my heels and hit you with it" face as I walked home.

Ah, Cairo.
